The strike by workers of TAP, called for the four days between 27 and 30 December in protest against the intention to privatize the company, was called off by nine of the 12 unions representing workers and reached an agreement with the Government, accepting the two-thirds sale of the company and increasing its interest in defining the specifications of this operation.

A statement released on Wednesday shows that the nine unions and the Executive “accepted the basis of a memorandum aimed at creating the conditions for operation of the working group, under the possible privatization of TAP Group.” The short note adds that “this assumption, the conditions for desconvocação strike scheduled for the 27th to 30th December this year are met.”

Of the 12 unions that initially came forward with the pre- strike notice, not desconvocaram to protest the Crew National Union of Civil Aviation (SNPVAC), the Union of Workers of the Aviation and Airports (SITAVA) and the National Union of Workers of Civil Aviation (SINTAC).

In the early afternoon, the SNPVAC sent out a press release saying he had not received “any memorandum to analyze and / or sign.” It added yet to be issued a statement signed by three unions, “which together account for over 50% of TAP employees, who keep the strike, respecting, however, decreed civil request”. This means that flights will not be affected .

“Common sense,” says Pires de Lima
The working group, which will help define the specifications that must be met by . Company buyers, shall consist of nine unions that gave up the strike and the Ministry of Economy This afternoon, at a press conference in Lisbon, the Minister of Economy launched, however, a call to the other three unions: “It is late to join the negotiation, “said António Pires de Lima, adding that these workers desconvocassem the strike, the Government withdraw the civil requisition.” Common sense and the bargaining spirit prevailed, “said the minister.

With this agreement, the terms of reference “will not be approved before January 15,” also said Pires de Lima, who stressed that the privatization of almost two thirds of TAP “is not at issue, nor could it be. ”

The protest led to a trial of iron between the workers and the Government. In response to the strike notice, the Government had advanced a civil request that covered about 70% of workers and intended to ensure the 1140 flights scheduled for those days. This week, the Arbitration Court of the Economic and Social Council had decreed what would be the minimum services to the days of downtime, leading the pilots to say that only fulfill the decreed by the court, thus disobeying the civil requisition. The president of TAP, Fernando Pinto, responded by warning drivers that ignoring the request could lead to disciplinary proceedings.

This Wednesday was also published the decree-law establishing the privatization of TAP, after have been issued on Tuesday by the President.

The operation, which molds had been outlined by the government in November, involves the sale of shares that may represent up to 66% of the capital (61% for investors and the remaining 5% to the company’s employees). However, the intention is that the state no longer has a stake in the company and the document provides that the sale of the remaining 34% can be made to the buyer or initial purchasers, provided that they have met a number of obligations related to the management of company.

Among the criteria listed for the buyer’s choice are the value of the proposed purchase, the contribution to the financial strengthening of TAP, the presentation of a strategic project for the company’s growth, the guarantee of service public, the contribution to the national economy, the absence of legal constraints and the technical and management experience.

News corrected to 14h36: the initial news indicated that 11 of the 12 unions had desconvocado the strike. The statement received by the PUBLIC list 11 signatory unions. However, two of these did not cancel the protest.
