More colorful, with a portrait of the mythological Europe and endowed with new security features. The new note 20 euros, the most counterfeited in Portugal and the rest of the countries that share the common currency, was presented Monday at the European Central Bank. Will be put into circulation on 25 November.

The new note 20 keeps the Gothic architectural elements that were already present in the previous footnote, and has the same dominant colors, although these have been “modified slightly to accommodate the improved security features” and to allow “distinguish them easily the notes of the first series, “says an explanation of the central bank.

Another novelty is the hologram with the face of Europe, a Greek mythological character who gave rise to the name of the continent. The image was taken from a vessel with more than two thousand years, found in southern Italy, and currently belongs to the Louvre Museum’s collection in Paris.

The portrait original shows Europe in a window. In the note, the window is placed on top of one side and, when viewed against the light, it becomes transparent and reveals the face which is visible both at the front and the back. Furthermore, “when the note is tilted, the window displays, front, multicolored lines around the representative figures of the note value and-back multiple multicolored figures representing the value of the note. This element provides technological innovation and makes counterfeiting the more difficult notes, “the statement said.

In Portugal, as in the rest of the 19 euro countries, notes 20 are the most counterfeited. Over the past year, were seized in Portugal, 9250 counterfeits. Of these, 51% were notes of 20. Second are the notes of 50.

In the coming months, note the copies will be made available to equipment manufacturers, so that they can make adjustments.

As has been the case with the new versions of the bill of five euros (circulated in 2013) and ten euros (which arrived last year), new 20 notes will circulate alongside the old. These will eventually be removed, but the operation has not yet scheduled. Also the higher value notes will be redesigned, although it is not defined when will be introduced.

This new series is the first since the original series, which began to be used in 2002.
