Court gives reason to retirees of the Lisbon Metro – Renaissance

The Metropolitano de Lisboa will have to end the suspension of payment of pension supplements imposed by the Government to the former workers of loss-making public enterprises, advances the “Public” newspaper.

The decision is the Court of the District of Lisbon and applies to 24 workers who had brought an action against the company, sponsored by the Workers Union of Road Transport and Urban Portugal (STRUP).

The judgment goes against a decision of the Constitutional Court regarding the case of supplements taken last year.

The Lisbon Administrative Court further states that the company will not only have to return the add-ons in its entirety as it has to pay, with interest, the amounts withdrawn from these 24 former employees. Still requires the payment of compensation of 2,500 euros for moral damages.

This was the first judicial decision favorable to workers. However, there is interposed, and other actions in dispute.

For now, the Metropolitano de Lisboa no use if it will appeal the court’s ruling.

Several hundred Metro workers agreed to leave the company before retirement age with the promise of the state company bear the difference between the salary and pension.

In some cases, supplements accounted for more than half the total amount that the former workers received. There since 1971 and were guaranteed to all employees who had entered the Metro by 2004.
