INE ensures that there is no “error” in unemployment figures – TSF Online

The president of the National Statistics Institute (INE), Alda Carvalho said on Friday that the review of the monthly unemployment data translates into the “application of the methodology” and not an error of that Institute.

“There is no mistake. It is the application of the methodology and the raw material we work effectively led that result. It is true that we were surprised with the size of the last review, which is not unprecedented. There have been in the past with data Eurostat, “said the president of INE in the press conference.

Alda Carvalho, who was speaking to journalists at a meeting in Lisbon, following the controversy surrounding the unemployment figures that over the past week caused some controversy between the Government and the INE, admitted to being surprised by the result.

There are about a week, the INE reported that the unemployment rate was 12.4% in June and revised significantly to low – 0.8 percentage points – the rate estimated for May. The May figures caused uneasiness between the Government and the INE, and came to the political debate, after the first estimate of unemployment may have pointed to a rise in unemployment, to move to 13.2%, after having been revised to 12.4%, the same as was calculated for the month of June.

“The first reaction we have when we displayed a surprising result is to go to the base and, in fact, the review we did before the disclosure did not justify us to do any changes compared to what was published. This does not mean never wrong, but in this case effectively, revisiting all of the monthly production process, come up strictly to the same conclusion “, he said.
