Minister for the Environment “strongly committed” in the decarbonisation of the economy – Jornal de Negócios – Portugal

The Minister of Environment, John Matos Fernandes, said today that the government is “strongly committed” in the decarbonisation of the economy and strengthening the autonomy regarding the use of fossil fuels by 2050.

The Environment Minister was speaking in Sines, at intervention in the ceremony of inauguration of the works of Polis Litoral Southwest (environmental and urban regeneration program) in the county, where he went to Odemira, with the same objective.

For Matos Fernandes, the recent Paris Agreement on weather marks the beginning of the end use of fossil fuels, since the known consequences on the emission of greenhouse gases rise to urgency in the effective implementation of mitigation measures and adaptation. “

Paris agreement, approved in December 2015 at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (cop21), was signed by 195 countries and is the first universal agreement to combat climate change and global warming.

The document provides that every five years the countries review their contributions to the fight against climate change.

According to the Environment Minister, mitigation measures will be directed to urban mobility, laying the use of public transport, electric mobility and modes of soft mobility as well as urban regeneration, promoting energy efficiency.

According to Matos Fernandes, adaptation measures “will include specific actions for the defense of the coastline, reforestation, particularly protected areas and efficient management of rainwater drainage networks.”

“The Portuguese coastline is, in Europe, one of the areas that already feel, and feel the effects of climate change. We have to adapt to the rising level of the sea and the occurrence of extreme weather events “he said.

Matos Fernandes also said that the state that has been reached does not already believe it will only be more stringent mitigation measures that will be achieved tackle climate change.

The Environment Minister was in Sines and Odemira accompanied by the Secretary of State for Regional Planning and Nature Conservation, Celia Ramos.

In Sines, the contract valuation Beach Samouqueira covered an area of 17,500 square meters and cost about 217,000 euros, and was co-financed by Community funds through the Territorial Enhancement Operational Plan (POVT).

The work focused on the protection and stabilization of the cliffs, in the planning roads and restricting motor traffic.

The contract for the recovery and rehabilitation of the beach Furnas, in the municipality of Odemira, budgeted at 234,000 euros, co-financed through the Regional Operational Programme Alentejo (INALENTEJO), focused If the improvement of access, in the parking system, the creation of a pedestrian path, the planting of tree species and the placement of road signs and informative.

In the area of ​​intervention of the Polis Litoral Southwest are still provided for dredging the mouth of the River Mira, near the beach Furnas, estimated endeavor to EUR 1.3 million.

The works are part of the set of rehabilitation interventions and recovery in 150 kilometers of waterfront the southwest coast, in a 9,500 hectare area in the municipalities of Sines, Odemira, Aljezur and Vila do Bispo, with a total value of 40 million euros.
