It was a spring day in 1995. car crossed the bridge over the Minho river at the foot of Valencia, towards the Galician city of Tuy, and did not happen at all. It was one of the most exciting moments of my life.
I was used to enter Spain after stopping at the border, waiting in an endless queue of cars and trucks, show your passport, answer questions from the guards and leave the car be searched before you can follow path. And the crossing this border always awoke before memories of April 25, where the wait was even longer, more aggressive questions, the most unpleasant police and stricter magazines, especially for young people who had to present their military documents in order and could be preparing to escape the colonial war.
that’s why I cross the bridge and enter Spain without seeing a single police without seeing a border post without showing a document was an unforgettable experience.
at the time I was still a naive believer in the European Union and it was for me to Europe. Not only freedom of movement, but the embodiment of the very freedom of citizens, trust in society, cooperation and solidarity between states.
I was then, as I consider myself today one European and one pro-European. Born between two countries and two languages, educated in four languages, accustomed to distrust all nationalisms, the idea of a Europe that transcends their countries I always was expensive.
That’s why the next Thursday, when we know the results of the referendum in the UK, I ardently hope that the result is the victory of “Brexit.”
not because I think the UK go get better outside the EU. Not because I think that the EU will be better off without the UK. But just because I hope that the UK’s output is the shock that will cause political upheaval, the examination of conscience and touch the democratic rebate that the European Union needs to reform radically and to rebuild in a format and with different rules under the sign of decency. the point is that the EU and its institutions have become the shock troops of world financial power and neoliberal ideology and, despite its democratic vows, impose asphyxiating agenda of austerity and prohibit indeed countries to pursue national progressive policies even when they are the democratic choice of the people.
the point is that the EU, self-proclaimed club of democracies and human rights welcomes in its midst without a blink countries that flout the most basic rights and adopt internationally Realpolitik to submit to stronger, obey the richest and turn a blind eye to the excesses of the aggressive.
